Offshore
Offshore Expat Services Netherlands
Offshore life runs on rotations: weeks on a platform, a vessel or a wind farm, then weeks at home. That rhythm makes a Dutch home base both essential and strange. You need housing, registration and insurance like anyone else, but you are unreachable half the time, your income structure confuses landlords, and your family handles every practical problem alone while you are at sea.
We are the fixed point on shore. We set up your Dutch base properly between rotations, timing every appointment for your onshore weeks, and we stay available to your family while you are out. A burst pipe, a municipality letter, a school question: they call us, it gets handled, and you hear about it as a solved problem.
Who this is for
- Offshore energy, wind and marine professionals basing themselves in the Netherlands
- Rotation workers whose paperwork must fit inside onshore weeks
- Families holding the fort during the offshore weeks
- Crewing agencies and employers arranging Dutch bases for international crew
What rotation work changes
An offshore rotation breaks most of the assumptions Dutch administration is built on. These are the ones that matter.
- Registration at a Dutch address is still required if the Netherlands is your main residence, whatever your rotation pattern.
- Long absences can affect registration, health insurance entitlement and the continuity needed for permanent residence.
- Social security may sit in another country under an A1 certificate, which changes your insurance obligation entirely.
- Landlords assess rotational income differently, and irregular payment patterns need explaining in the file rather than after it.
- Seafarers and offshore workers can fall under specific tax and social security rules that do not apply to onshore staff.
- We coordinate the Dutch side. Cross-border tax and payroll go to specialists we introduce you to.

How it works
- 01
Map the rotation
We start from your schedule and build a task plan that fits entirely inside your shore leave.
- 02
One intensive onshore sprint
Housing, registrations and insurance completed in a concentrated push while you are here.
- 03
Steady state
You rotate out knowing the base is solid and someone on shore is watching it.
What offshore support costs
Tailor-made proposal
Rotation schedules make offshore work unlike any other relocation. You receive a proposal built around your rotation and the length of the contract.
- Housing that fits a rotation rather than a nine-to-five
- Immigration handled around time offshore
- Appointments scheduled inside your shore weeks
- A permanent point of contact while you are unreachable
Offshore tax and social security positions vary with flag state, employer and days worked; we flag when your situation needs a cross-border tax specialist and connect you with one from our network.
Making a rotation work onshore
Can everything be done in one shore period?
Usually yes, and that is how we plan it. Appointments, viewings, registration, banking and insurance are compressed into a single intensive week ashore rather than spread across three rotations. It takes preparation on our side and documents ready on yours.
What happens while I am at sea?
We remain your address in practice: correspondence handled, deadlines watched, landlord questions answered, appointments moved. Your family, if they are here, has a number to call that is not an international one.
How do absences affect permanent residence?
Continuous residence is broken by absences of more than six consecutive months, or more than four months a year across the qualifying period. Rotations are usually well inside that, but the arithmetic is worth doing deliberately if you are working towards permanent status.
Which insurance applies to me?
It depends on where your employer is established, which flag you sail under and whether an A1 certificate is in place. Offshore is the area where we most often find people either double insured or not insured at all, so we establish this at intake rather than assuming the standard answer.
Frequently asked questions
Can everything really be arranged within one shore leave?
With preparation, usually yes. We collect documents and book appointments while you are still offshore, so your onshore weeks are spent signing and settling rather than waiting.
Landlords hesitate at my offshore contract. What do you do about it?
We translate your employment reality, day rates, rotation contracts, crewing agency structures, into a rental dossier that reads as the stable, high income it actually is, and we vouch for the file in person.
Can my employer or crewing agency pay for this directly?
Yes, direct employer billing is standard for us, including framework arrangements for agencies that regularly base crew in the Netherlands.
